What is Ozempic?

July 25, 2024

We’ve come a long way from when weight loss medications were limited to just appetite suppressants and questionable supplements that were “tried, tested and proven” to help you lose weight.

A new domain has now been discovered (or rather created) and this is the domain of injectable weight loss treatments.

You might’ve seen articles and clippings about “Ozempic”, linked to certain celebrities like Elon Musk or Oprah Winfrey.

What is “Ozempic” and why is it being raved about?

Ozempic contains a GLP-1 Receptor Agonist (RA) known as semaglutide that was coincidentally found to have weight loss benefits in patients on this treatment for diabetes.

Rybelsus tablets and Trulicity are also other examples of GLP-1 RAs that are used to treat diabetes but also helps with weight loss at the same time.

There are now many other GLP-1 RAs approved specifically for weight loss in Singapore. These are Saxenda, Wegovy and Mounjaro.

How do they help with weight loss if they’re actually treatment for diabetes?

This is how:

🤤 Reduces cravings and suppresses appetite

It mimics the GLP-1 hormone to override your cravings and hunger hormone.

🍽️ Prevents overeating

Have the effect of slowing down digestion gastric emptying, making you feel full faster and for longer.

📉 Decreases body fat mass

Weight loss is mainly due to the reduction of body fat mass.

But wait! Before you get excited and think you could benefit from this treatment, there is a criteria to qualify for this treatment and that’s if…

A) Your BMI is more than 27
B) Your BMI is more than 23 and you have pre-existing chronic condition that’s weight related such as diabetes

This criteria is in place to a. ensure that this treatment is used for those who medically require it, and b. For safety reasons because it can unnecessarily reduce blood sugar levels for those who are not suited for it.

With all of this information, I also feel that it’s important to remind you that while these treatments can be viewed as “miracle drugs”, they’re not.

They are a form of extra support, a component in a holistic approach that should also include changes to your diet and lifestyle. It’s part of the bigger picture, if you will.

So if you find that you could do with the extra help to help you lose 12-15% of your body weight over 12 months (and fulfil the 2 criteria above)…
