Types of Hair Loss

July 25, 2024

Did you know that hair loss isn’t just… hair loss?

There are actually various types of hair loss with different causes.

As usual, I had to dive in deep, do my research and ask questions so I can share what I learnt with you 🤓

Here are the 3 most common types of hair loss…

1️⃣ Generalised hair loss/thinning

Generalised hair loss and thinning can be caused by a couple of factors.

😖 Stress

This can lead to an overproduction of cortisol (stress hormone) that causes increased hair fall.

📈 Hormonal imbalances

Thyroid hormones or oestrogen (female hormones) can be possible culprits of disrupting the hair growth cycle.

🩸 Nutritional deficiencies

Iron deficiency or folate deficiency can be known to cause hair loss or thinning as both nutrients are important for maintaining healthy hair follicles.

2️⃣ Patchy hair loss

Alopecia areata, also known as autoimmune alopecia, is the loss of hair caused by your immune system attacking your hair follicles. This usually results in patchy hair loss, resulting in bald spots.

There is no cure for alopecia areata, and the duration in which it causes hair loss differs from person to person. However, there are treatments to facilitate the regrowth of hair in the affected area(s) directly.

3️⃣ Male/Female pattern baldness

Pattern hair loss is the most common type of hair loss in both males 💁‍♂️ and females 💁‍♀️. It’s a progressive, non-scarring form of hair loss that follows a specific pattern (hence the name pattern baldness).

Early detection and treatment such as oral treatments and/or topical solutions can help slow its progression to prevent further hair loss using . However, genetics 🧬 play a part in both male and female pattern hair loss as well.

So I’ve shed some light on the common types of hair loss… But how exactly do you fix it?

You’ll have to wait until next week to find out more then 👀
