What’s a Healthy Weight?

July 25, 2024

Does anyone remember seeing the numerous weight loss injection ads on their Instagram or Facebook just weeks ago?

Since then, some of our patients have been asking about this and how it helps with losing weight. So I thought it’d be a good topic to share with you more about.

Before we get into that… What exactly is a healthy weight? ⚖️

Most people immediately think of a number that they should be at. Is that number actually a “healthy weight” though?

CDC and a bunch of other health organisations claim that we should be looking at our BMI, which calculates a ‘healthy weight’ range based on your height. 📊

Measuring your waist circumference 📏 has also been recognised as a way to estimate potential disease risk. Because excessive abdominal fat can place you at greater risk of obesity-related conditions such as diabetes and heart diseases. What about body composition analysis 👫? Some say this is more accurate because it measures not just an overall weight but also your body fat %, muscle mass and skeletal mass.

With so much information, which one are you supposed to follow?

The answer is all of them, depending on your goal.

🥅 If you need a basic guideline of what your weight should be, then use BMI. 📊
🥅 If you have a family history of chronic diseases like diabetes or hypertension and you want to lower your own risk of that, then also pay attention to your waist circumference 📏.
🥅 If fitness and health is your goal, then your body composition analysis 👫 should be considered.

Most importantly, ask yourself how you feel.

Do you feel healthy?

Is there more you can be doing to get there if you don’t?

While there is a so-called ‘right’ answer to the healthy weight question, it depends on what you’re trying to achieve at the end of the day.
