Achieving a target weight is no joke. Just ask anyone who has tried to either lose or gain weight.
We often see the spotlight being shone on the solutions to your weight loss problem – weight loss journeys/programs, fad diets, fitness routines. Companies and influencers sell you on their fix to your woes by telling you that they can help you to “lose weight” or “not get hungry”.
That’s not to say that these don’t work, but they may not work for everyone and there are actually a few reasons for that.
So let’s backtrack for a bit and explore why losing weight is tough in the first place.
1️⃣ Diet 🥗 = 70%, Exercise 🏃♂️ = 30%
Heard this saying before?
Try as you might, it’s not going to work even if you’re exercising 3-4 times a week but not eating right.
There’s this thing called metabolic body type, and it centers around how your body burns certain food sources (carbs, proteins, fats) for energy.
So if you’re eating food that doesn’t align with your body type, it can’t metabolise and use stored energy efficiently, which basically reduces the effectiveness of your exercise.
2️⃣ Genetics 🧬
Obesity can be linked to genetics and environmental factors.
Although genes do not exactly determine ‘destiny’, they may be a factor that can complicate the situation. It can be so much harder for someone with a genetic predisposition to developing obesity to achieve weight loss even with considerable efforts.
If your family members are mostly overweight or obese, there is a high chance that genetics could be one of the contributing factors.
3️⃣ Hormones 🥴
It almost seems like that there’s a hormone for every alphabet under the sun that can make it difficult to lose weight.
We’ve got insulin, which helps your body to store sugar. But an overproduction of insulin due to insulin resistance (aka your body’s kinda immune to the insulin) can be linked to obesity.
There’s also cortisol, a stress hormone that can contribute to weight gain if it remains at high levels.
Estrogen, a female sex hormone that regulates the menstrual cycle, can also contribute to weight gain or obesity if levels are either too high or too low.
I could go on, but do I need to? 🥲
Isn’t it frustrating when you’re trying hard but your body is working against you? It is, if you do it all on your own without the knowledge needed.
If you’re equipped with the knowledge required, you might stand a chance against all these opposing forces.
